About twice a week last summer Fred would have me drop him off in the country somewhere, and like a homing pigeon, he would hike back home. These early hikes were around 10 miles without a heavy pack, but as the summer went on, he loaded weight (sand in gallon milk jugs) to simulate his fully-loaded pack. I admired his commitment to training; something I know will get him through his upcoming hike. Go Fred Go!

Sharing the hike with my sister. She’s amazed. It just occurred to me never to mention swimming to Chicago.
