On March 25, 2018 I turn 62 and will have a go at thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) to raise funds for the National Park Foundation (NPF)*. Our parks are a national treasure and now more than ever they need our help. This 2,200 mile trek runs from Georgia to Maine through 14 states and will take me approximately six months to complete. Coincidentally, this is the 50-year anniversary of the National Trails System, of which the A.T. was the first designated National Scenic Trail. I am chronicling this challenging endeavor at: www.athike.jollyoutthere.com, on Facebook, and on Instagram: @jollyoutthere.
As environmentalist and writer Wallace Stenger noted, “National parks are the best idea we ever had.” And now is the time for all of us to step up and lend our support. Thank you.
*The National Park Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service, enriches America’s national parks and programs through private support, safeguarding our heritage, and inspiring future generations of national park enthusiasts.Chartered by Congress in 1967, the National Park Foundation raises private funds to help protect more than 84 million acres of national parks through critical conservation and preservation efforts, connect all Americans with their incomparable natural landscapes, vibrant culture and rich history, and engage the next generation of park stewards.
